Edible Wild Plants
Foraging for food was an important part of the Wampanoag way of life. With hundreds of different wild edible foods, the Wampanoag had a varied diet that was rich in nutrients. In fact, the land provided so many edible plants that the Wampanoag had a more varied diet than our modern diet.
In this section you will find a partial list of the foods the Wampanoag may have eaten. These are all foods that I have personally found in the wild and have eaten myself. When properly prepared, they are a delicious way to add nutrients and variety to your diet.
Feel free to forage your area for these common foods and to add them to your diet. Before eating any new plants, makes sure you properly identify them. Using a field guide such as Peterson’s Edible Wild Plants will help you make sure you’re eating the correct plants.
